I'm not sure this setup is necessarily a breakthrough since you can develop a similar mechanism for a flow battery or even a concentration cell. I only see this as useful for energy recovery during brine disposal from a desalination plant. Otherwise, I really don't see the potential... The real achievement here is the membrane technology.
