- Avatar Svadi: When seabirds, such as bludgeons or red-eyed birds, dive into the sea to catch herring, the whales open their mouths wide open right at the surface of the water. The mouths of humpback whales are becoming like small pools. The fish mistakenly takes them as shelters in which to hide from the birds, and swims into the trap itself. Sometimes the whale drives the fish in the right direction with the pectoral fins.
- Samuel Mason: Very impressive.
I wonder if that's tool usage lol.
- Adohleas: No, they are doing this because the birds are scaring the fish, the whale then opens their mouth as the fish are seeking a safe hideout from the birds. This is essentially an easy meal for the whales because they don't have to spend as much energy compared to swimming.
